This Fall 2019 season of Maison & Objet, House Tipster Industry teamed up with our partner, Interior Design Society, to experience the best of the European trade fair’s international designers, vendors, and more.
At this year’s event, IDS National President Kimberly Joi McDonald was able to catch up with Patti Carpenter, Global Trend Ambassador for the show, and hear all about her work in education and trendspotting.
“I’ve been working with the show for five years now as their Global Trend Ambassador,” Carpenter said. “What that means is basically working with their marketing and promotions team to let, especially the United States design community, understand what can be found here, how innovative it is, how inspirational it is, and how much information there is that you can take away to lift your design quotient and bring something new back to your clients or businesses.”
Beyond Carpenter’s work at Maison & Objet itself, she works in trend forecasting based on what she learns from the show’s abundance of sights.
“After I come to this show, and I take about 3,500 to 4,000 pictures per edition, and I sift through those and distill,” Carpenter added. “There’s a tremendous amount of information that has to do with furniture, with objects, with what’s new and what’s next with fragrance, with kids… there are incredible things you can find here.”
“It’s very overwhelming for most people who don’t get all five [show] days here, so I go home and distill that down into four categories that all of us in the industry need: What are the colors we see right now rising to the top? What are the palettes of color, and how are we going to use those colors together? What’s the print, pattern, and surface design, and what are the materials?”
