PPG Paints Names Night Watch the Color of the Year 2019

PPG Paints has unveiled its color trend palette for 2019, and it’s a nature-inspired collection anchored by a powerful green hue.

Tied to this release, the paint company has named Night Watch PPG1145-7 its Color of the Year 2019.

“Our newest beauty is born out of community, luxury and nature,” PPG Paints revealed in its announcement. “In an ever-disruptive world, we want to escape to a quieter place – one that’s protective and beautiful. Night Watch gives us that pathway.”

“It’s a black infused green that can be used as a neutral or statement accent,” the brand explained. “Night Watch can make you feel healthy, grounded and calm, allowing other coordinating décor colors or interior plants to be showcased against its luxe backdrop.”

PPG Senior Color Marketing Manager Dee Schlotter said the color represents a turn to nature that is craved by our society.

“The restorative power of nature is important in society now more than ever,” Schlotter said in a statement. “Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through color. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”

For its Color of the Year selection process, PPG Paints turns to its global team of experts, which represents 8 countries globally. The group samples trends and design directions cross-culturally and across a slew of spaces, like retail, residential, automotive, and more to capture the moods and mindsets happening across the world.

This year, PPG has released a full 2019 color palette featuring the color team’s findings. The forecast, titled “WE ARE,” is composed of 100 key colors in four color stories, all tied together by the standout pick, Night Watch.

So, how does PPG recommend you use their Color of the Year 2019?

The brand considers Night Watch to be a versatile hue that can easily make a statement across healthcare, commercial, and residential design projects.

Still, it’s powerful, so make sure to place it strategically throughout your space to maximize its effect without overpowering your existing décor.

While the rich green color would make a great choice for a bedroom, small dining area, or living room accent wall paint, PPG recommends you use the nature inspiration to bring the outdoors in.

Night Watch “can be especially impactful in places without any view or tie to the outdoors, like the end of a windowless hallway of a hospital,” according to a brand press release. “For exteriors, Night Watch is a gorgeous alternative to the trending black or deepest blue-black, and it works well as an accent on doors and shutters.”

It’s a great follow-up to PPG Paints’ 2018 choice, the rebellious blue-black shade Black Flame.
