Color of the Year

Behr Paint Names Blueprint Color of the Year 2019

Warmer than denim, but softer than a true navy blue: this year’s color selection by Behr Paint is a mid-tone blue called Blueprint S470-5.

The brand describes this shade as “an honest, approachable color that conjures up the blueprints builders rely on to bring architectural designs to life.”

“Blueprint creates a space where you can build your own reimagined life—where awareness of what we want to build for ourselves can transform into action,” Behr shared in a statement.

Erika Woelfel, Behr’s vice president of color and creative services, compared the “instant classic” color to the way creators make new beginnings.

“Much like the sketches builders rely on to bring an architectural design to life, Blueprint S470-5 lays a foundation for consumers to make their unique vision a reality,” Woelfel said in a statement.

In addition to revealing Blueprint for 2019, Behr Paint has also unveiled four complementary color palettes that incorporate moody blues.

Color Binge offers a monochromatic range of blues and grays; Soft Focus delivers lighter pastel blues along with peach and lilac; Inspired Curation focuses on rich jewel tones; and Down to Earth goes way warmer with earth tones.

Together, these palettes show how complementary colors can be used as wall colors, ceilings, trims, and accents. And of course, they’re all anchored by the surprisingly versatile shade Blueprint.

The brand recommends this color for use in bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, and even outdoors or as a great paint for accent furniture.

If you’re not totally shocked that 2019’s Behr color is blue, that may be because the brand chose a similar, lighter blue-green shade called In the Moment in 2018. Blueprint isn’t a radically different departure, which is actually amazing as the years blend into one another.

“In 2018, society was focused on mindful living,” Woelfel said. This year’s shade is all about “matching the spirit of reimagination in our homes and everything that’s happening in the world.”

“We know that people aren’t re-painting every room of their home each year,” Woelfel added, “so we again chose a Color of the Year that will be on trend for years to come.”
