Sherwin-Williams has announced its annual Colormix Forecast for 2020, revealing a collection of 45 influential colors.
The hues are part of five curated collections: Alive, Mantra, Play, Haven, and Heart.
Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, and a team of Global Color Forecasters researched emerging color trends and influential shades around the world – from pop culture to design and beyond – to come up with their selections. The team noticed an abundance of warm, joyous, and serene shades standing out among the pack.
“We expect 2020 to be an empowering year of change that will focus on bringing your best self into the new decade,” Wadden said in a press release. “Homeowners and designers alike are seeking warmth—colors that feel human and natural. The colors in these five palettes, when invited into our spaces, pave the way for wellness and self-nurturance.”
Below, we’re breaking down the five different color collections being spotlighted by Sherwin-Williams for 2020, and how the hues can come to life within interior spaces.
Alive is all about rich neutrals, inspired by nature and boosted by the use of locally-sourced materials.
“Optimistic and authentic, Alive centers around being present and soaking up every moment,” the brand explained about this collection. “Nurturing neutrals are artfully arranged with rich blues and a deep, ripe olive that evoke a satisfying and rejuvenating sense of community and living well. When using this palette, incorporate materials and finishes that are locally-sourced, handmade and reflective of care and craftsmanship.”
As part of the Alive collection, you can find the Sherwin-Williams colors Ripe Olive SW 6209, Naval SW 6244, Sleepy Blue SW 6225, Tassel SW 6369, Endless Sea SW 9150, Touch of Sand SW 9085, Sandbank SW 6052, Canyon Clay SW 6054, and the brand’s 2019 Color of the Year: Cavern Clay SW 7701.
“East meets West in this serene collection of softly muted neutrals that glide from warm to cool,” Sherwin-Williams said of the internationally-inspired Mantra range. “Nordic simplicity entwines with the order and elegance of Japanese aesthetics to create a look that’s simple, yet utterly essential. Mantra lends itself to clean lines, minimal ornamentation, warm metals and rounded forms.”

With a name like “Play,” you know this range is all about taking childlike fun to the next level.
“This energetic and clever palette exudes charm through buoyant, playful color,” the brand shared. “Anchored by a fresh, pure white, it’s peppered with surprising pops of bright pink, aqua and gold and balanced through monochromatic neutrals. Its mission is to add joy and warmth to every space it touches. Lean into Play by sourcing unique lighting, fun patterns and varied textures.”

“Like being welcomed home with open arms, this nature-inspired palette beckons to those who seek to transform their space into an oasis,” Sherwin-Williams said. “Drawing upon Earth’s seasonal cycles, it features rich, yet subtle shades of sea, sand, forest and sky to organically bring the outdoors in. Extend Haven into décor through sustainably-sourced materials and biophilic features.”

This palette pairs well with retro-inspired accessories and warm, earthy finishes.”
