It all started with an Instagram post. When interior designer Charlotte Moss spotted a special purple floral fabric panel on her feed, she knew it would be the perfect statement piece for her master bedroom space at the 2019 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York City.
Then, an enchanting story board grew, and a room inspired by global travelers and art collectors followed.
The House Tipster Industry team was able to speak exclusively with Charlotte Moss Senior Designer & Project Manager Matthew Kowles at the charity show house’s press day unveiling in Manhattan, which commemorated the designer’s ninth year participating in the cause.
First up, he let us in on how Moss’ design inspiration sprung to life through following her friends on social media.
“A girlfriend of hers had posted a picnic photo, and this was her picnic blanket,” Kowles said. “Charlotte had me track it down at a linen shop in Genoa, Italy, and told me to buy all of the inventory they had in stock. We had about ten to twenty panels, and we covered all the furniture in the same fabric.”
This eye-catching fabric is featured on the bed’s canopy and backboard, plus wall paneling, and on wicker chair seat cushions. The cohesive look beautifully ties together the room’s sleeping space, sitting area, and hall entryway. Additional fabrics in the room include coordinating blue prints like vintage gingham.
Pieces from Italy, Sweden, India, the Netherlands, Tanzania, China, and more are on display throughout the space, each telling their own story about the designer’s dream client for the room.
“Charlotte imagines this room to be the bedroom of a married couple that have wanderlust, so they’ve spent their lives exploring the world and bringing back pieces from their trips – souvenirs and artifacts that they like to be surrounded by,” Kowles said. “So this is their little nest. You can imagine there are a lot of stories to be told in here.”
