Robert Passal Creates Tranquil Salon at Kips Bay NYC 2019

Robert Passal Interior Design and Daniel Kahan Architecture teamed up to create a dreamy Parisian-inspired escape at the the 2019 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York City. The collaboration resulted in a pink, 20th century living room called “Salon de Réflexion,” that’s tucked away on the charity show home’s top floor.

The House Tipster Industry team was able to speak with designer Robert Passal at the show house’s recent press day unveiling in Manhattan, where he explained how he brought a tranquil European-style salon to the bustling Upper East Side.

“I wanted to do something reminiscent of the time this house was built, and it was built in the 1920s,” Passal said. “We really incorporated a lot of elements that would have been incorporated into homes at that time. So all the walls are hand-cast plaster, all of the picturelles are bronze, so we used plaster, bronze, limed oak floors, and marble, which are all materials reminiscent of that era.”

All of these materials combined give the space a vibe that it has been here in the Upper East Side townhouse for ages – with a few distinctly modern updates.

“If you came into the space, I think you’d think it had always been here,” Passal added. “I didn’t want the space to feel as if I’d just installed it, but that it was a sort of evolution.”

The classically charming space does also boast some serious high-tech details – but the technology doesn’t get in the way of the room’s historical feel. For example, the living room’s television is part of a large mirror hanging over the fireplace, so when you turn off your favorite show, the screen blends right in to its surroundings.

Plus, the sound system’s speakers are actually built into the ceiling, so guests don’t see any cables, wires, amplifiers – or evidence of all those 21st century distractions.
