Pappas Miron Design Displays Eclectic Style Mix at Kips Bay NYC 2019

Pappas Miron Design founders Alexandra Pappas and Tatyna Miron Ahlers created an Italian-inspired sitting area called “Palazzo Terrazzo” for this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York City.

The idea was to bring “a little European flair to East 74th Street” for the 2019 charity showcase.

The special details already existing in this historical home in Manhattan’s Upper East Side directly inspired the design choices Pappas Miron Design made in bringing this colorful and inviting space to life.

“The inspiration for our sitting room came directly from the inherited terrazzo flooring and chimney breast,” the design duo shared in their show notes. “Upon first seeing these elements, we were reminded of the great modern Italian interiors which are created by a mix of periods and style, always resulting in unique flair. We used the deep coloring of the floor as a back drop to create a handsome and luxurious sitting room, featuring rich teal velvet wall upholstery, venetian plaster ceilings and a gorgeous antique carpet. So inviting are the tones and materials, one would be drawn to curl-up with a good book by the fire or entertain late into the night. This 4th floor room is both elegantly timeless and playful, as well as an ode to bohemian style.”

The variety of materials used, combined with the eclectic mix of international furnishings and bohemian design elements bring out the firm’s signature playful-meets-sophisticated aesthetic.

“Luxurious fabrics were layered with varying textures: cream boucle on a 70s styled custom sofa, saffron-colored silk on the tufted antique lounge chair and a dreamy linen gauze on our sheer drapery that has a breath of pink,” the designers explained. “An antique Swedish chest plays nicely with new work from ceramicist Jennifer Nocon in her lamp collaboration with the ever-stylish David Netto and a spray of stunning mirrors from Cristobal Morales are a wonder to behold. A suede-covered vintage Karl Springer etagere hosts a collection of vintage pottery and bronze vessels. The wet bar is a glamorous surprise, lined with a unique metallic paper, custom brass & glass shelves and a gem of a mid-century lantern in turquoise – a Pappas Miron signature color – from Eric Appel. The adjoining bathroom has been clad with a soothing aqua-toned plaster, warm chocolate brown cork floors and the sink is made from an usual stone featuring large green inclusions on a rose-hued ground. Crowning the room is a crystal chandelier for a touch of old world sophistication.”
