If you are looking luxurious and historical design, you will find it in Tamara Stephenson’s space for the Holiday House 2019 show in the Hamptons. The interior designer, author, and co-owner of New York-based textile and wallpaper company Root Cellar Designs, created an elegant powder room for this summer’s show home.
House Tipster Industry host Alexis Parent of Connecticut-based Alexis Parent Interiors spoke exclusively with Stephenson at a special press preview event for the show, where she explained how she custom-created special pieces to fit this year’s house.
When you enter the first floor bathroom area, you will be immediately captivated by the sparkling metallic Vaughan mirrors and grand wall coverings, which Stephenson’s team made just for this charity-supporting show home in Water Mill.
“My business partner [Susan Young] and I run Root Cellar Designs. She was a faux finish painter before we got together, and this was one of her paintings that she made,” Stephenson explained of the pattern. “Now we print these a little larger for this scale of this bathroom, scaled it, and re-colored it. We wanted this ethereal blue and ecru color to reflect the Hamptons.”
On top of the wallpaper, the designer also created a notable art wall that features black and white photos of Jackie O. In addition to the historical photography from the Patrick Montgomery Collection being a compelling conversation piece, the display also adds a local touch to the space.
“I live out here in East Hampton half the year, and I’ve always loved her,” Stephenson said. “She grew up here, in Southampton. There was a place called the Southampton Riding Club, which no longer exists, and these are from here. Her mother was a well-known equestrian. I just felt like in this room – this is a modern house with a barn-like architecture – and I wanted to reflect the past and the future together.”
