During this year’s SIGGRAPH Conferences in Los Angeles, our team spoke with the team behind Pixologic, the makers of ZBrush, the all-in-one digital sculpting solution. This conference season, Pixologic presented within Formlabs’ event space, as their companies have a natural partnership.

Through our junior editor Frank Wolosik’s interview with Paul Gaboury, lead product development manager at Pixologic, we learned all about this innovative tool, which enables the use of customizable brushes to shape, texture and paint virtual clay in a real-time environment.

“We’re the digital sculpting application that everyone uses to create content with,” Gaboury said. “A lot of stuff you see at the Formlabs booth, even the images you see on their booth, are actually being made in our software. We’re a digital clay software that people can make whatever they can imagine.”

ZBrush is a helpful application across the spaces of automotive, aviation, medical, art, and beyond.

“We’re really in about ten industries,” Gaboury explained. “We’ve been developing rapid-prototyping tools, 3D printing tools, for the past 10-11 years, so people have been printing with us for that long.”

“Formlabs is a great printer for our user base to get into, because it’s a great value, great price, and a phenomenal print,” he added. “A lot of our artists use their printers to create their pieces, whether it be a collectible, or something they want to sell.”
