Brazilian brand Konsepta Design made its ICFF debut in New York City, where it presented a series of ceramics and glass pieces made in various natural colors and materials.
House Tipster host and Arch-Interiors designer Christopher Grubb was introduced to Claudia Issa from Konsepta during her first presentation at this season’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair. The artist shared her personal story – and how she started making these eye-catching home accessories.
Issa comes from a richly artistic background, having honed her array of conceptual art talents across disciplines, but she is relatively new to creating ceramic pieces – or any other tangible products.
“I used to work in art direction, and [I used to be a] graphic designer a long, long time ago for many years,” Issa shared. “I [also] used to design fashion.”
Then, a friend suggested she channel her creativity into ceramics – an art form she had never tried. Unexpectedly, she found that she absolutely loved it!
“It was like, woah, it was a surprise I could do this with my own hands,” she said. “For me, it’s a pleasure. My work is aligned to this, I love to show everybody this.”
Konsepta uses materials like tobacco clay, porcelain, carbon-like hand-blown black glass, and more in her nature-inspired designs.
“The idea is to use nature form in the house,” Issa explained. “Stone is very heavy to put in your house, [but] everybody loves stone. It’s beautiful in the garden. The idea it to move from the house [and you can play] with these pieces.”
One of Konsepta’s main goals is to keep the focus on artisans and celebrate the uniqueness of pieces – no two of the brand’s products are exactly alike, and “imperfections” are what make the items extra interesting.
