Color of the Year

Valspar Announces 12 New Colors of the Year 2019

While many brands have been releasing a 2019 COTY, Valspar has released 12 colors to define the direction of the year ahead.

The paint brand has created a trend forecast of mood-inspiring shades intended to inspire design enthusiasts to customize their space.

“The Valspar Colors of the Year are bolder takes on basic colors to provide color-curious consumers the opportunity to create change within their homes in an easy, fun and attainable way,” Sue Kim, Valspar Senior Color Designer at Sherwin-Williams Consumer Brands Group, said in a press statement. “We believe changing your outlook can be as easy as changing the paint on your walls.”

Below, we’re breaking down these 12 unique and influential shades.

Deep Mystical Purple

First up is Deep Mystical Purple, a dark and moody purple that “invites us to step away from ‘what is’ and open up to exciting and unexpected new realities,” according to the brand. A bold accent color, we love this shade as a way to define special spaces within the home, like bookcases or seating areas.

Note that this shade is 4001-6C Metropolis Violet at Lowe’s, and it is also called V075-6 Dried Lilacs at Ace Hardware and other independent paint retailers.

Healing Airy Blue

Next up is Healing Airy Blue, which Valspar describes as a “breezy blue” that “has healing qualities but doesn’t take itself too seriously.”

This light and airy color would look beautiful in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, laundry rooms, and beyond. Essentially, anywhere you need a little extra touch of tranquility. And if we’re being honest, that’s practically everywhere.

“Its weightless quality seems to push past the walls and welcome us into the controlled sanctuary we call home,” according to a brand press release.

You can find this shade at Lowe’s as 5003-9B Angelic Blue, at Ace as VR054D as Soothing Blue, and at independent retailers as V068-2 Soothing Blue.

Keeping some of the relaxing and tranquil theme going, Valspar announced Chalky Sea Green, a lovely nature-inspired hue.

“This harmonious green-blue is perfectly balanced, neutral enough to inspire our growth in any direction,” Valspar shared in a statement.

While many decorators might otherwise shy away from using green all over the walls, this soft shade could work well with most neutral decors – especially against grays, black, and white.

This color is known as 5003-4A Green Water at Lowe’s, VR077B Zinc Blue at Ace, and V099-5 Zinc Blue at most other paint retailers.

Crisp Illuminated Violet

Somewhere between a pastel and a powerful purple, there is the futuristic shade Crisp Illuminated Violet. Though delicate and spring-like, it somehow seems to sizzle with electric energy when used on the walls.

“Anticipating uncharted territory ahead, this light, clean violet reflects the edge of artificial space, where light is both comforting and strangely familiar,” Valspar explained in a statement.

This color is named 4004-9B Twilight Mist at Lowe’s, VR058D Carousel Purple at Ace, and V071-2 Carousel Purple at other independent retailers.

If you’ve been enchanted by the takeover of rose gold metals in the world of fashion, jewelry, and tech devices, we imagine you’ll know why the shade Soft Rosy Mauve is trending heavily for 2019. It’s a soothing and stylish option for living rooms, home offices, dining rooms, libraries, and more.

“This rosy neutral injects an element of spirituality into everyday life, giving us a

rosier view of reality,” Valspar said in a statement.

What’s a good blend between powerful pops of purple like Metropolis Lilac, with the everyday usability of Blushing Bride? Valspar’s shade Calm Hazy Blue feels like something chic in the middle. The gray tones in this deep indigo-purple shade can work in sitting areas, family rooms, and beyond.

“This quiet, thoughtful blue has a touch of purple to free our thinking and a hint of

gray to ground us in our own, glorious — but imperfect — human nature,” Valspar explained.

To add a zesty punch of fashion-forward paint to a space, Active Lime Green is your 2019 go-to. We think it’s best in small doses – like in striped panels, wall art, and trim – but the color’s essence is all about design fearlessness.

“Flip the fearless switch to on and use this citrusy green to create surprise in a

corner of your home with a dash of healthy luxury,” Valspar advised.

At Lowe’s, this vibrant shade is called 6008-9B Lime Mousse, at Ace it is known as VR015D Bright Cactus, and at independent retailers it can be called V057-2 Celery Heart.

Blonde Wood Yellow

The spaces in a home where you retreat to relax – like the bedroom, study, or reading nook – should be uplifting yet calming. But that doesn’t mean those rooms need to be stark or devoid of color. Valspar’s yellow-beige Blonde Wood Yellow is bridging that gap.

“This raw wood shade is the light, unencumbered backdrop for a minimalistic lifestyle that is full of life,” Valspar shared about this color. “The lightness has just a touch of comforting yellow.”

You can look for shade 3007-6B Homey Cream at Lowe’s, VR040E Glow Home at Ace, and V051-1 Glow Home elsewhere.

Expressive Fringe Orange

Finally, the Valspar Color of the Year 2019 12-part palette is rounded out by a powerful citrus punch called Expressive Fringe Orange.
