Kristin Mullen Creates Garden Room In 2019 Hampton Designer Showhouse

One of the great draws of Hamptons living is how the exquisite great outdoors seamlessly inspires interior design. Kristin Mullen of Dallas, Texas-based design firm Curated by Kristin Mullen used the splendid greenery of Southampton, New York in her charming, topiary-filled garden room for the 2019 Hampton Designer Showhouse.

“The garden room was really inspired by a trip that I took to a local store, that has actually become a national store: Mecox,” Mullen exclusively told the House Tipster Industry team during the show home’s recent opening event.

“Mecox has the most wonderful trellis outside of the store. I’ve always admired it: it’s very architectural, very fresh, and at the same time, really traditional.”

The room’s elegant trellis is featured up on the walls and ceiling, along with rustic Nobilis faux bois wood wallpaper, making the indoor space seem like it’s an extension of an inviting patio deck off the gardens.

“It really gives the room a fantastic feeling and texture,” Mullen said. “I’m really excited with how it came out.”

The standout architectural details of this showhouse season’s Paramount Custom Homes property also lent itself to the designer’s overall room plan.

“When I saw this space, I knew immediately that I wanted to employ that design and turn this into a fantastic garden room,” Mullen explained. “But more particularly, [I wanted to] turn it into a fantasy potting room.”

The avid gardener would not only feel at home in this tranquil escape, but would also find it to be a functional space to get some work and research done in.

“The centerpiece of the room is this very luxe potting table,” Mullen said. “Ordinarily, you would have a potting table that would be done in a natural wood, maybe a cedar, but I decided to up the glamour factor and do a lacquer finish on it, [paired with] an absolutely enormous zinc sink, where you could pot flowers [and start seedlings].”

Curated by Kristin Mullen worked with Benjamin Moore, Circa Lighting, Custom Rods and Draperies, Diana Rome Smith, Garden Structure Design, Legacy Antiques, Manual Canovas, Merida, Nobilis, Roberts and Co., Sweetgrass Botanicals, The Lamp Shop, The Sawyer Collection, Tommy Mitchell, and Walter Lee Culp in the design of this space.

Additionally, the garden room showcases special pieces from the designer’s own Curated by Kristin Mullen boutique, located in Dallas.
